The singer-songwriter told DS that the new film is very different from the Talking Heads live movie from 1984.
Asked if he felt any pressure for his new project to match Stop Making Sense, Byrne said: "Oh absolutely. I thought, 'I can't try and compete with that - Jonathan Demme did such a great job with that one'.
"But this one seemed to be evolving into a different kind of animal. It seemed to be more about how the show was put together - the backstage elements and the rehearsal elements and auditions and that sort of thing as opposed to being just what the show is."
He added: "And the show itself is different, with the dancers and all the choreography and other things that were going on, so I thought, 'OK, we'll see - it might be different enough not to suffer by comparison to that film'."
Ride, Rise, Roar screens at 50 UK cinemas tonight.
