Mel Gibson plans to address the Oscars audience in Maya – the language featuring in his new film.
The actor/director told the Time magazine website he will give the the Kodak Theatre crowd a sneak preview of the ancient tongue set to be spoken in Apocalypto.
Gibson, who will not be acting in the new film, explained: "I wanted to shake up the stale action-adventure genre so we almost had to come up with something utterly different like this."
Apocalypto will focus on a Mayan man's life and look at "civilisations and what undermines them," continued Gibson. He added that it will be set before the European conquest of Central America and so shun "European faces".
