The actress told Metro that she was not sure how Portman would cope with all the adulation she is predicted to received.
Ryder said: "The award seasons are so crazy now because there are so many award shows. I just don't know how Natalie is going to handle it.
"Being kind of a shoo-in to win everything, it's probably great because she's got so much love happening but I think I'd just be at home watching on TV."
Of her role in the film, she added: "That script was weird and, in reading it, I was like, 'What's going on?'. You really had to trust that director Darren Aronofsky's vision was going to make a cohesive, great movie.
"And I loved the whole parallel of getting older. It's very different in real life with me and Natalie, because she's been working since she was 12, like me. It's not like she's a newcomer but the whole idea is about getting older in the ballet world and, of course, it's also harder to find roles in acting."
