Liam Hemsworth has confirmed that he is hoping to secure one of the lead roles in the upcoming film adaptation of Suzanne Collins's The Hunger Games trilogy.

Actresses rumoured for the film's lead female role include the likes of True Grit actress Hailee Steinfeld and Kick-Ass star Chloe Moretz, while Hemsworth has said that he wants to take on the lead male role.

"I read the script," Hemsworth told MTV News. "It's a really, really cool story."

While Hemsworth has yet to meet with the film's director Gary Ross, the young actor did confirm that he would be doing so very soon.

"I mean, it's pretty early right now," Hemsworth continued. "But yeah, I'm sure I'll meet [Ross] soon."

The Hunger Games is set in a post-apocalyptic world where teenagers are picked to take part in a televised fight to the death, similar in plot to the Japanese film Battle Royale.

The Hunger Games is due to begin production over the next few months.
