Speaking to Movieline, Oscars co-host Franco said that his film about trapped climber Aron Ralston is more cutting edge than the "classically structured" Social Network.
He said: "I know I'm biased, I think [127 Hours is] the most innovative movie this year. The Social Network is about new technology and how people are communicating now? Or it's supposed to be? They don’t deal with any of that! It's a very classically structured movie and classically made movie.
"127 Hours is about a guy - one single character in a single place. That is like the cutting edge of moviemaking, short of doing it in 3D or something."
Franco said that he sees director Danny Boyle's movie as "perfect", and lamented that audiences want "more of the old, boring stuff. People sitting around talking, and then car chases".
Of his experience at this month's Sundance Film Festival this month, Franco added: "I've seen three love stories here at Sundance. Traditional love stories! It's the same old! Two heterosexual white people can't be together... How many times have you seen that story? Romeo & Juliet! It's 400 years old!"
The Social Network was yesterday nominated for eight Academy Awards, while 127 Hours scooped recognitions in six categories.
