The 14-year-old actress was recognised in the 'Best Supporting Actress' category yesterday for her role in the Coen brothers' movie True Grit.
During an appearance on ABC's Jimmy Kimmel Live on Tuesday, the star said: "I was asleep when the announcements were being made. I woke up because my parents were screaming in the other room as they watched!
"It's very overwhelming; it's a lot to comprehend [but] I have great family and friends who are very supportive."
She also joked that she had received more text messages since the announcements were made than at "any time" in her entire life.
Kimmel also asked if she knew that Justin Bieber had sent his congratulations to her via Twitter, urging her to get her own social networking account.
"I am [aware of that]," she replied. "I think I should!"
Steinfeld and Bieber met at the Golden Globe Awards where they presented the award for 'Best Animated Feature'.
The 83rd annual Academy Awards will take place on February 27 in Los Angeles.
