The character - who first appeared in 1995's A Close Shave - currently features in his own children's television series on the BBC, which has aired since 2007.
According to BBC News, writers are working on a script and are hoping to complete the film by 2013 or 2014.
Aardman's creative director Richard Goleszowski revealed that Shaun the Sheep was influenced by the silent film star Buster Keaton.
He explained: "My goal is to make a modern-day silent movie starring Shaun. When we started writing the television series we stuck a picture of Buster Keaton on the studio door.
"I grew up watching slapstick films and some of the jokes have become embedded in my psyche."
