Banksy has said that he was 'surprised' to receive an Oscar nomination.

The elusive street artist has been recognised in the 'Documentary Feature' category for his directorial debut, Exit Through The Gift Shop.

According to the PA, he said in a statement: "This is a big surprise. I don't agree with the concept of award ceremonies, but I'm prepared to make an exception for the ones I'm nominated for.

"The last time there was a naked man covered in gold paint in my house, it was me."

Banksy is seen in the documentary, but only appears in shadow and with his voice disguised to preserve his anonymity.

The film, which follows a Los Angeles-based graffiti artist called Mr Brainwash, is up against Gasland, Inside Job, Restrepo and Waste Land.
