The film started out as a prequel to Scott's original Alien movie, until continued work between Scott and Lost writer Damon Lindelof led to the project evolving into Prometheus.
"Oh absolutely. There's a definite connecting vein," Fassbender told MTV News, when asked whether the film was still linked to the Alien universe. "You realise you're part of something else, but it's definitely in keeping with the old ones.
"It's new, yet it's in keeping with the old traditions as well. But there's a whole new revelation within this film."
The X-Men: First Class actor claimed that Prometheus is similar in tone to the original Alien in terms of being more of a thriller, as opposed to the film's three sequels, which focused more on action.
Prometheus, which also stars Noomi Rapace and Charlize Theron, is due for release in cinemas on June 8, 2012.
