In an interview with the Huffington Post, the Mad Men actor said that the project - which is based on an unnamed book he read many years ago - would be produced and directed by himself if brought to fruition and admits to perfecting his directing skills on two episodes of the AMC series last season.
"I have a script that I just finished that I'm trying to work out the rights situation," he said,
"And that's why I asked to direct Mad Men, which was a great experience, but it's someone else's vision - it's clearly [showrunner] Matt Weiner's vision of the show."
Slattery went on to reveal that he recently began making progress on getting the film off the ground after meeting a key industry exec at a concert.
"I went to a concert somewhere and I ended up sitting next to the guy who controls the rights to the movie," he recalled.
"And I said to him, 'You're not the guy who controls...' and he said, 'Yeah, why, you want it? I'll give it to you'."
