Ice Cube will produce and star in a film version of ABC's TV show Welcome Back, Kotter.
Originally played by Gabe Kaplan in the series which ran from 1975 to 1979, Cube's character is a teacher who returns to his tough old neighbourhood in Brooklyn where he finds a new generation of underprivileged unmotivated inner city kids. The story was based on Kaplan's own experiences as a remedial student in the city.
Tom Brady (The Hot Chick) is currently in talks to write and direct the movie.
Cube told Variety of the project: "There was no bigger fan of the original show than me, and I'm very excited to be able to put a new twist on it."
