Film fans vote 'King Kong' best film

King Kong has won best movie and Pride and Prejudice best British movie at the Empire Awards.

The film-watching public – who vote for the awards – chose Peter Jackson's remake over Oscar winner Crash as well as Sin City, Star Wars Episode III and War of the Worlds.

Crash's Thandie Newton took best actress and Johnny Depp was named best actor for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Star Wars won best science-fiction/fantasy film and its "birth of Vader" was scene of the year.

Empire editor Colin Kennedy said although many winners did not win Oscars, they showed what "real movie fans" liked.

Best movie - King Kong
Best British movie - Pride and Prejudice
Best actor - Johnny Depp (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory)
Best actress - Thandie Newton (Crash)
Best director - Steve Box and Nick Park (Wallace & Gromit: The Curse Of The Were-Rabbit)
Best comedy - Team America: World Police
Best thriller - Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang
Best horror - The Descent
