Costner, who starred in The Untouchables and The Company Men, is rumoured to be wanted for the role of Jonathan Kent, Superman's adoptive father, reports Latino Review.
According to the story depicted in the comics, as well as various movies and TV series, Jonathan and his wife Martha discover a small ship carrying a young boy that crash-lands on Earth and decide to raise the boy as their own, naming him Clark Kent. Clark ultimately becomes Superman.
Costner has yet to sign on for the role. Should he choose to star in the film, he will be joined by the recently cast English actor Henry Cavill, who will play Superman himself.
Zack Snyder's Superman: Man of Steel is scheduled for a December 2012 release.
