Posting on Twitter, the I Am Number Four helmer confirmed that recent rumours linking him to the project were true.
"My deal just closed on Preacher," he wrote. "Going back to the dark side and pretty f**king pumped."
Producer Neil Moretz is said to be in possession of a screenplay for the film, written by John August. It is unknown whether Caruso will pen his own treatment.
Written by Garth Ennis and illustrated by Steve Dillon, Preacher was first published under DC's Vertigo imprint in 1995. The story follows a downtrodden clergyman who becomes the most powerful being in existence after being possessed by a supernatural creature.
A potential release window for the film is yet to be announced.
