In an interview with PopEater, the actor confessed that while he has not seen every film recognised, he still believes that people of colour have been fairly represented amongst the honourees.
"I think that art likes to express society and the way the world is. Hopefully that's what it's trying to do. I gotta be honest with you, I didn't go looking through every performance, looking at all the films that were made, maybe the ones that even I missed to be able to consider so I can't speak," he explained.
"But I know clearly over the last number of years there's been a strong representation of people of colour. Hopefully that's going to continue."
Whitaker previously won the 'Best Actor' Oscar in 2006 for his role as Idi Amin in The Last King of Scotland.
