Speaking to MTV on the Academy Awards red carpet on Sunday, Bonham Carter revealed that she was interested in the key role of Dr. Julia Hoffman, an alcoholic doctor who specialises in blood disorders.
"I think I'm going to do it, and I think it's because, well, I've never played an alcoholic psychiatrist," Bonham Carter said.
Bonham Carter's partner Tim Burton is directing the project, which stars Johnny Depp in the lead role of Barnabus Collins.
The actress explained that Burton suggested she play the part as a departure from her usual roles.
She added: "I thought it was a sexy part he wanted me for, and I'm saying, 'Yeah, I can play the sexy witch.' And he said, 'No, you've done that. You're going to play the psychiatrist who's an alcoholic!'"
Michelle Pfeiffer, Eva Green and Jackie Earl Haley are also reportedly circling roles in the project.
