MGM, the producers of the original, initially targeted Black Swan helmer Darren Aronofsky for the update before halting work on all its films to deal with the studio's troubled financial situation.
Deadline reports that Padilha was chosen because of his success in his native Brazil, where his film Elite Squad 2 raked in more money than Avatar last year.
The first movie about the cyborg cop haunted by his human past was directed by Paul Verhoeven of Starship Troopers fame.
