The Twilight actress, who is the daughter of Oscar-winning filmmaker Ron Howard, told Showbiz 411 that the drama is inspired by John Hughes's '80s classic The Breakfast Club.
The Originals, which Howard co-wrote with Dane Charbeneau, was bought by Universal and Ron Howard's Imagine Entertainment firm in 2009 and revolves around a group of friends experiencing a "quarter-life crisis" after the death of one of their former teachers.
Asked if she had anyone in mind for the cast, Howard replied: "So far, I wrote a part for Zoe Saldana. But there are so many good choices out there."
