The director - who helmed the first film of the series - told Newsweek that she chose to leave the project to pursue other projects and does not regret her decision.
"I couldn't even be fired, that's what's so funny. In my contract, I had the first right of refusal," she said.
"I do not regret it at all, thank the Lord... The truth is I liked the first book the best."
Hardwicke also described the relationship between Twilight stars Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart as "love at first sight".
