Last week, Justin Bieber: Never Say Never director Jon Chu was announced as the replacement director for Stephen Sommers, who decided not to return for the follow-up, prompting speculation as to whether any characters would be removed or recast.
Nichols, who played Scarlett in the first film, has now claimed that her character won't be back for the sequel.
"G.I. Joe 2 News Flash: The only characters to return in the Jon Chu directed sequel will be Snake Eyes, Storm Shadow, and Duke," Nichols tweeted, later admitting she had been sad at hearing the news. "After the G.I. Joe news I had Heavy Boots, but I'm smiling now!"
The Eagle star Channing Tatum played the lead role of Duke in the first film, while Ray Park and Byung-hun Lee played Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow respectively.
Paramount Pictures will release G.I. Joe 2 in cinemas on August 10, 2012.
