Stellan Skarsgård is reportedly set to reprise his supporting role in Thor as Dr Selvig in Joss Whedon's upcoming all-star film The Avengers.

According to Swedish website Expressen, Skarsgård himself has confirmed that he will be appearing in The Avengers next year, although little is currently known about his role or amount of screen time.

Skarsgård will first appear as scientist Dr Selvig in this summer's Thor, where he will share most of his scenes with co-star Natalie Portman.

The actor's son and True Blood star Alexander was long thought to be in the running for the titular role in Thor, a part that eventually went to Chris Hemsworth.

Thor is to open in cinemas on May 6.
