The helmer announced last year that he will retire from the business after the release of his last project Hit Somebody in 2012.
Speaking at a promotional night for his latest film Red State, Smith said that he was pleased fans were upset about his decision.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he said: "I feel good about that. I feel like my critics are probably saying, 'Oh, good, he's leaving'."
However, he added: "I'm willing to try other directing projects."
Red State stars John Goodman and Oscar winner Melissa Leo.
