Del Toro had been attached to direct an adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft's At The Mountains Of Madness, until it was announced earlier this week that the project would not be moving forward.
Deadline published a statement released by Legendary Pictures yesterday, confirming the helmer's involvement in the project.
"We started developing Pacific Rim a while ago with the mad passion and enthusiasm of a project unwatched and unchecked by politics or comparisons," the director says in the statement. "My partnership with Legendary represents, both in scale and creative demands, a huge step forward for me."
Few details about the film's plot have been released, although it is known that Clash Of The Titans writer Travis Beacham has penned the script.
Pacific Rim will begin filming this September.
