Answering fan questions on the X-Men Facebook page, Singer nevertheless confirmed that the forthcoming Marvel Comics blockbuster should be considered a prequel and not a reboot.
"We did our best to maintain continuity with the other films," he said. "But as sometimes happens for the sake of telling the most compelling story possible, we made a few concessions."
Singer stated that he chose to set the action in the '60s time period because it was "a time of socio-political upheaval in the world: the height of the cold war period; the birth of the civil rights movement; the birth time of the X-Men comic book".
Asked if he has sequel plans for the comic book movie, Singer stated that he is "just focusing on this one at the moment".
Director Matthew Vaughn's X-Men: First Class, starring James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, January Jones and Jennifer Lawrence, opens in cinemas this June.
