The Winter's Bone actress, who has long been the frontrunner for the project, will take on the character of Katniss Everdeen in the movie version of the young adult book trilogy.
Director Gary Ross said: "Katniss requires a young actress with strength, depth, complexity, tenderness and power.
"There are very few people alive who can bring that to a role. Jen brings it in spades."
Series author Suzanne Collins also praised Lawrence, adding: "Jennifer's just an incredible actress. So powerful, vulnerable, beautiful, unforgiving and brave. I never thought we'd find somebody this perfect for the role."
The Hunger Games will begin production later this year, with a tentative release date set for 2012.
