Vilanch, who has co-written on 21 Oscar broadcasts, earlier told New York magazine that the 127 Hours star "didn't get there" when he oversaw last month's ceremony with Anne Hathaway.
The comedy writer claimed that Franco only arrived to begin work three days before the February 27 show, suggesting that his commitments to Yale University hampered the actor's preparations.
"Bruce he let me down," Franco wrote in a Twitter update, which was accompanied by a photograph of himself and Vilanch saying: "James f**ked up the Oscars. Trust me, I know comedy. I mean, come on, I write for Bette Midler!"
The 32-year-old later deleted the comment and image from his social networking account.
Franco reportedly avoided his own Oscars party following the ceremony to fly straight back to New York.
