According to Deadline, DeGeneres has teamed with Storyline Entertainment partners Craig Zadan and Neil Meron to back the project.
Jodi Picoult wrote the novel that tells the story of a young woman who loses her husband after she gets pregnant but the child is pronounced stillborn. The woman later develops a romantic relationship with a female guidance counsellor.
The book touches on social issues including in vitro fertilisation and gay rights when the woman seeks to have a child by obtaining frozen embryos left behind by her and her husband, who becomes involved with an evangelical church.
It was reported in January that a source close to DeGeneres and her partner Portia De Rossi denied claims that the couple were planning to adopt a child.
The pair married at their Beverly Hills home in August 2008.
