Following the casting of Henry Cavill as the titular hero and Kevin Costner and Diane Lane as Jonathan and Martha Kent, Warner Bros is now focused on securing an actor to face off against the Man of Steel.
Shannon, Oscar-nominated for his turn in Revolutionary Road, has appeared in The Runaways, Jonah Hex and Vanilla Sky.
Viggo Mortensen was previously rumoured for the part of Superman's Kryptonian nemesis General Zod, although Snyder has since denied that the Lord of the Rings actor will appear.
Yesterday reports emerged linking Carlos actor Edgar Ramirez to the unnamed villain role.
Superman is scheduled to open in cinemas in December 2012.
