Variety reports that Black Swan actress Kunis will star alongside James Franco, who was confirmed for the title role in February. The pair have previously worked together on Date Night.
The new film is intended as a prequel to the original 1939 movie The Wizard of Oz, which was based on a book by L. Frank Baum. Kunis will play the role of Theodora, the youngest of the three witches.
It is not yet known who will play the other witches, Glinda and Evanora, although names suggested include Olivia Wilde, Amy Adams, Kate Beckinsale, Keira Knightley and Rebecca Hall.
The film will be directed by Sam Raimi, with a script by David Lindsay-Abaire (Rabbit Hole) and production from Joe Roth (Alice in Wonderland). Filming for Oz: The Great and the Powerful is due to start in July.
