The actor will be taking on the role of the double-crossed agent Jim Prideaux in the latest version of the Cold War drama, which was first adapted for television in the 1979.
He told Empire Online: "The book itself is quite elliptical, quite arcane, and you'd need to have that in the film as well."
The actor added that he loves working with director Tomas Alfredson, who is best known for the break-out Swedish child vampire film Let the Right One In.
Strong said: "I was so happy going to work because he's so intelligent. Every day you'd turn up and Tomas would show you his ideas. What we had on the page was just a framework - what we see in the film is something else."
The Sherlock Holmes star will next be seen in Green Lantern.
