Paramount has temporarily shelved its reboot of the Jack Ryan franchise with Chris Pine in the lead role.

According to Deadline, the studio has abandoned plans to make the spy thriller before Pine's next outing as James T. Kirk in the Star Trek series in 2012.

The Ryan series relaunch, which has Lost director Jack Bender at the helm, has reportedly been struck by production problems, with Paramount unable to finalise an origin story script.

The movie will centre around Tom Clancy's CIA agent in his early years, with a helicopter crash that happened during his time as a US Marine serving as a jumping off point.

Hossein Amini, Adam Cozad and Anthony Peckham have all worked on the Ryan script, which at one point was titled Moscow, but no draft has been met with studio backing.

Clancy debuted Jack Ryan in his 1984 novel The Hunt For Red October and the story was adapted for the big screen with Alec Baldwin playing the character.

Harrison Ford took on the role in Patriot Games and Clear And Present Danger before handing it over to Ben Affleck in The Sum Of All Fears.
