Speaking at the CinemaCon convention in Las Vegas, the filmmaker said that the new filming technique would greatly improve 3D movie images.
Cameron plans to shoot the follow up to Avatar at 48 to 60 frames a second to reduce a "strobing" effect that he said can blur moving film images, reports The AP.
"I was stunned when I saw it, at how clear and crisp it was," Cameron said.
He added: "If 3D is like looking at reality through a window, we've taken the glass out of the window."
The Oscar-winning director also revealed that he is still working on a script for the sequel and that he would not begin shooting Avatar 2 for another 18 months.
"I've got a bit of time to get this sorted out," he explained.
Cameron previously claimed that the Avatar sequels could be released by Christmas 2014 and 2015.
