The star of the US version of The Office will play a man who leaves his wife just before an asteroid is expected to hit Earth and destroy humanity.
Knightley will play a neighbour who accompanies him on his journey to find his teenage sweetheart and tells Carell's part that she wants to be with him when the asteroid hits.
Seeking a Friend for the End of the World will be directed by Lorene Scafaria, who penned indie hit Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist.
Carrell will next be seen in Crazy, Stupid, Love and Great Hope Springs.
