Director Wes Craven has previously spoken about his desire for the man behind the franchise's Ghostface character to remain a secret on-set in order to build a sense of fear in the rest of the cast.
However, during Craven's appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, the talk show host held up a picture of the actor in question and revealed his name to be Roger Jackson.
After the mystery was lifted, Craven said: "We sneak him into the set before the actors arrive. We put him upstairs some place, in an obscure room and put a guard out front... No actor, until now, has ever seen him."
The next instalment of the serial-killer franchise, starring series regulars Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox and David Arquette alongside newcomers Hayden Panettiere and Emma Roberts, will be released in cinemas on April 15.
