While at a press conference in the Fairmont Miramar Hotel in Santa Monica, Witherspoon spoke about the period costumes in the '30s-set film, stating that she almost didn't recognise herself, according to People.
She said: "It was really transforming for me. [The costumes] were beautiful. It was a different time when women loved their curves and enjoyed being voluptuous."
Witherspoon recently revealed that she was impressed by her Water For Elephants co-star Robert Pattinson's ability to avoid the paparazzi.
The actress married Hollywood agent Jim Toth last weekend. Witherspoon was previously married to actor Ryan Phillippe from 1999 to 2007.
Water For Elephants opens in US cinemas on April 22 and in the UK on May 4.
