The director told Cineworld Unlimited that the upcoming horror sequel has been informed by the impact of the web on filmmaking.
Craven said: "It's been an extraordinary decade, and the rise of social networking and the internet in general have been a huge part of it.
"I'm fascinated by the way filmmaking and blogmaking are starting to merge. And in this film the plot is built around those kind of elements. Things have happened in that decade that are just unprecedented."
Asked what still scared him, the horror icon said: "I'm still 72 and I still have the occasional nightmare. When you're a veteran of life you get a little more refined in your taste for fear. And you get better at confronting it."
Last month, Craven suggested that Scream 4 is "not entirely" his film after Ehren Kruger was drafted in to reboot Kevin Williamson's script.
Scream 4 hits cinemas on April 15.
