Hemsworth, Hutcherson join 'Hunger Games'

Liam Hemsworth and Josh Hutcherson have been cast in the forthcoming film adaptation of The Hunger Games.

Hemsworth will play Gale Hawthorne while Hutcherson will portray Peeta Mellark in the project, Lionsgate has announced.

The actors join Winter's Bone actress Jennifer Lawrence, who landed the lead role of Katniss Everdeen earlier this month.

Director Gary Ross is helming the adaptation of author Suzanne Collins's best-selling thriller novel.

Hemsworth's films include The Last Song and Knowing. Hutcherson has appeared in several films, including The Kids Are All Right and Journey to the Centre of the Earth.

Actors such as I Am Number Four star Alex Pettyfer, Weeds cast member Hunter Parrish and X-Men: First Class actor Lukas Till also reportedly auditioned for roles in the film.

The Hunger Games is due to be released in US and UK cinemas on March 23, 2012.
