The former Prison Break actor will take on an undisclosed role in the futuristic science fiction film, which is said to be similar in style to Blomkamp's Oscar-nominated District 9 but on a larger scale.
Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, Wagner Moura and Sharlto Copley will star in the movie, which will be released on March 8, 2013 through Sony Pictures. Bill Block and Simon Kinberg are serving as producers on the project.
Foster and Fichtner previously worked together on Robert Zemeckis's 1997 sci-fi drama Contact.
Fichtner recently appeared in Drive Angry 3D and has a recurring role as TV producer Phil Yagoda in HBO series Entourage. The 54-year-old is also closing in on a deal to sign in Quentin Dupieux's Rubber follow-up Wrong.
