The former Grey's Anatomy star will play the lead role in HBO Films' The Knitting Circle, reports Deadline.
The film is based on the bestselling novel of the same name by author Ann Hood.
Heigl will co-produce the movie with her mother Nancy Heigl.
Former Six Feet Under and Dirty Sexy Money scribe Craig Wright is penning the script.
The novel centres on a grieving mother who joins a knitting circle after the death of her daughter.
The release of Heigl's previously announced film project One for the Money was recently pushed back to January 2012.
The actress is reportedly replacing Halle Berry in the forthcoming romantic comedy New Year's Eve.
