The legendary horror director claimed that he was impressed by the way writer Kevin Williamson was able to interlink characters from the original trilogy with the new additions.
"Kevin [Williamson] was very clever in having Emma Roberts's character being connected to Sidney, so you have that link to the past," Craven told Shock Til You Drop. "But she's very much her own character with her own circle of friends.
"We beat the bushes for a while looking for people, extraordinary young actors," Craven explained, when asked how he chose the newest generation of Scream characters.
The director also hinted at his feelings towards the potential for fifth and sixth films in the franchise, admitting that he was cautiously optimistic about the possibility.
"To now be following these characters in their thirties is interesting," he said. "You don't want this series to dominate your life and you want to explore other avenues creatively, but to have participated in it this much is remarkable."
Scream 4 is due out in cinemas on April 15.
