Cumberbatch, who previously starred in the director's 2007 film Atonement, was confirmed as a member of the cast by Wright himself in an interview with The Playlist.
"Kelly Macdonald's confirmed, Benedict Cumberbatch is confirmed. I'm still waiting on Saoirse [Ronan] and James [McAvoy]," Wright revealed.
Keira Knightley, Aaron Johnson and Jude Law will also star in the big-screen adaptation of the Tolstoy novel.
Cumberbatch is currently starring in Danny Boyle's London theatre production of Frankenstein, which was screened in cinemas around the world in March.
The Sherlock actor recently split from his girlfriend Olivia Poulet. The two dated for ten years after meeting at Manchester University.
