Director Bryan Singer has revealed that fairy tale adaptation Jack the Giant Killer will have a "fun twist".

The film will star Nicholas Hoult in the title role and Alice in Wonderland's Eleanor Tomlinson as the princess kidnapped by a neighbour kingdom.

Speaking to Total Film, the X-Men helmer said: "What if we look back at the story that inspired the story that you read to your kids? That's kind of what this movie's about."

He added: "It'll also be a fun twist on the notion of how these tales are told."

Ian McShane is to play King Brahmwell, with Ewan McGregor and Bill Nighy in supporting roles.

Jack the Giant Killer will join a plethora of other fairy tale adaptations to hit the cinemas in 2012.

Snow White and the Huntsman and Brothers Grimm: Snow White are also due for release next year.
