Joaquin Phoenix is in talks for a "comeback" role in Paul Thomas Anderson's latest project, it has been claimed.

The actor has not made a film since the controversial mockumentary I'm Still Here.

Variety reports that the untitled film could see Phoenix playing the follower of a cult leader who begins to question the man's authority.

Anderson regular Philip Seymour Hoffman is to play the leader known as The Master.

According to the entertainment site, the film follows the relationship between the two, as Phoenix's character becomes increasingly disenchanted with the Master's religion, which is allegedly based on scientology.

Phoenix was reportedly considering roles in The Raven and The Genius last year.

He also turned down the part of a drug dealer in the Jonah Hill comedy The Sitter.
