Deadline reveals that the actor signed onto the project, which is being written and co-directed by Run Lola Run's Tom Twyker and The Matrix's Andy and Lana Wachowski, earlier this week.
The movie's logline describes the plot as "an epic story of humankind in which the actions and consequences of our lives impact one another throughout the past, present and future as one soul is shaped from a murderer into a savior and a single act of kindness ripples out for centuries to inspire a revolution. "
Warner Bros will distribute Cloud Atlas in the US while Focus Features International will handle sales and distribution worldwide, with rights expected to be sold at this year's Cannes Film Festival.
Shooting will begin in September 2011.
Halle Berry was previously named for a role in the film, with James McAvoy also rumoured to be taking part.
