The film has been picked up by Universal Studios and has already been assigned Michael Mayer to direct.
Mayer directed the Broadway musical version, which announced it is to close last month following the departure of Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong from the cast.
Screenwriter Dustin Lance Black is also due to work on the project. Black's previous credits includes Harvey Milk biopic Milk.
Hanks has previously had experience adapting musicals for the big screen, with Mamma Mia! back in 2008. The film, which featured songs by ABBA, went on to gross over £373 million ($609 million) worldwide.
The theatre version of American Idiot is to close on April 21.
