Speaking to Digital Spy, McBride disclosed that the 127 Hours actor was forced to make a weekly return flight to New York after getting an ultimatum from his tutor.
"We were shooting in Belfast and at the time he was enrolled, I think it was in Columbia in New York, and there was one teacher he had that said, 'Unless you are in the class Tuesday mornings you're going to be dropped from class'," McBride said.
"Every day we'd finish shooting on Monday night, Franco would get on a plane, fly to New York, go to the class, get back on the plane when the class was done and fly back to Belfast. He did that for the last month and a half of shooting. He's a very dedicated student."
Asked about Franco's studious nature, McBride replied: "He is a fun guy, but he does read a lot. He'll do these crazy sword battles then goes back to the corner and reads his book."
