The character's first film appearance will follow Steve Rogers' transformation into Captain America during World War II, but in next year's team-up film The Avengers he will feature in a present day setting.
Captain America: The First Avengers screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely said that covering over half a century would be an enticing prospect.
"It's sort of a weirdly huge opportunity for storytelling in that you know modern Cap through The Avengers at that point," Markus explained to MTV Splash Page. "There's going to be a lot of his World War II history we haven't shown.
"We're going to have two entire timelines to play with."
Despite these revelations, both writers said that it was still too early to discuss the sequel's plot, and McFeely admitted that they were waiting to gauge fan reaction to Captain America: The First Avenger before making any concrete decisions.
"If [the first Captain America film] does well and people embrace the World War II aspect of it, maybe there's pressure to return there in a large way," McFeely added. "But if they don't embrace that aspect and just love Chris Evans as Steve [Rogers], maybe there's less pressure to do that, you can just keep him in the Avengers universe."
Captain America: The First Avenger is due out in cinemas on July 22 and you can watch the film's latest trailer below.
