Barrymore played the short-lived Casey Becker in Wes Craven's first entry in the slasher franchise, a character who appeared only in the first ten minutes and whose demise is still regarded as one of the best deaths of the Scream films.
"I loved that it actually got tongue in cheeky but it was still scary and it was this great game that sort of described genres and revived them at the same time and redefined them all in one script," Barrymore told EW.
The actress credited Craven himself as the reason she felt so at ease while filming her traumatic scenes.
"He's such a sweetheart, he's just the coolest," she said. "He really did make me feel incredibly safe and I really gravitated toward him, I tend to do that with directors."
The fourth entry in the Scream franchise was released in cinemas this weekend.
