Chris Hemsworth has revealed that playing the title role in Thor is a "dream" come true.

The Australian actor, who stars alongside Anthony Hopkins, Natalie Portman, Rene Russo and Stellan Skarsgard in the Kenneth Branagh-directed movie version of the comic book tale, said that he feels very lucky to be living out a boyhood fantasy.

Hemsworth told AAP: "When I was a kid I dreamt this kind of stuff and then as an adult, an actor, to work among these people is just an absolute dream. Walking into it, I thought it was going to be one of the most intimidating experiences, and I couldn't have felt more supported.

"Anthony Hopkins was just wonderful as was Ken, and Natalie, and to be around them and learning from them was hugely beneficial and exciting."

At the recent premiere of the movie, Hemsworth revealed that he and his wife, Spanish actress Elsa Pataky, are both "very excited" about his blossoming career and "couldn't be happier".

Former soap star Hemsworth revealed a fortnight ago that it feels like "last week" that he was still starring in Home and Away. He also said that co-star Portman was "fantastic" to work with.
