20th Century Fox animation Rio has topped the Australian box office for the second consecutive weekend.

The 3D movie, featuring the voices of Jesse Eisenberg and Anne Hathaway, boosts its box office takings by 33% to hold off competition for the top spot from Simon Pegg's latest comedy Paul.

Hop climbs a place to number three, while Wes Craven's horror sequel Scream 4 makes a disappointing debut in fourth position. Completing the top five is Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Roderick Rules.

Elsewhere, Sucker Punch is the biggest chart faller as it loses almost 50% in box office receipts and plummets five places down to seven.

The box office top ten in full (figures in Australian dollars):

1. (1) Rio - $3,056,885
2. (-) Paul - $2,195,121
3. (4) Hop - $2,115,727
4. (-) Scream 4 - $1,798,821
5. (-) Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Roderick Rules - $1,448,216
6. (3) Just Go With It - $1,107,118
7. (2) Sucker Punch - $884,460
8. (5) Justin Bieber: Never Say Never - $794,628
